About
ARCHITECTURAL DESCRIPTION: Describe architectural features. Evaluate the characteristics of this building in terms of other buildings within the community. This is one of Pelham’s best-preserved Capes in both its architecture and landscape setting. The house and rear lot are set off from the road on at least three sides by stone walls. It is a particularly fine example of the center chimney Cape as it has a broad, side-gable roof that generously encompasses a house that is five bays wide and three bays deep. Typical of building practices of the time, the windows are placed close to the eaves and the eaves themselves in the gable ends are clipped for little to no overhang. The roof of the main house is wood shingled maintaining a practice from its time of construction. There is a one-and-a-half story wing on the east side of the house and a one-and-a-half story ell on the rear with an attached garage. The two bay wing projects slightly forward from the plane of the main block of the house. The kitchen ell has a slate roof and an interior chimney. There is a variety of window types in the house. The principal façade has 12/12 double hung sash, while on the other facades double hung windows are joined by 6 x 6 and 4 x 4 casement windows. Window surrounds have simple drip cap lintels. Across Meetinghouse Road from the house is a side aisle, New England style barn with a cupola on its roof. It appears to date from the second half of the 19th century, ca. 1870.
